Traveling Light
Travel Lighter and Greener – When traveling for pleasure or business, make a practice of developing a checklist of traveling essentials to avoid hassles and possibly forgetting an important item. At the top of the list should be which travel bag or luggage is necessary for this trip. Actually, the weight of your traveling bag may be the barometer of the fun indicator on your trip. Airlines are now charging more for heavier bags which translates to additional cost in your rates not to mention the number of hours you need to spend to wait for your luggage to go through the luggage carousel on and off the plane. Meanwhile, a carry-on traveling bag means you earn extra time for more enjoyable activities and the convenience of traveling light. Foregoing the bulky luggage can be the first step to traveling light. I would like to share with you three self-proven and time-tested tips on how to travel light and comfortable.
First on my list is my checklist. With all the things going on to our minds, a checklist on hand minimizes the room left for forgetting a must-have on your travel. Preparing a well thought-out checklist can be insurance of enjoyable and comfortable travel. It will be your discretion on what to put on your list depending on the type of travel you will be having and the place you are going into. You may delete from your list the things which you may purchase cheaper on your travel destination. This one page list is invaluable when it’s time to return as it allows you to assure nothing was left behind. Spend a few minutes considering your activities and include only those items that are necessary. If you plan to shop for souvenirs, consider shipping these home rather than packing.
Second, experiment and explore. Perhaps it will be better if you check out the area you are traveling to and consult weather reports in the area for the time you’ll be there. If there are shops available where you can purchase some things you might need on your destination, then you can unload these items from your travelling bag. Also, try to remember your last travel, perhaps there were items in your travelling bag that you had no use for, omit those too. You may also prefer lighter clothes and wardrobes that don’t require large space in your bags.
Third, but not the least consideration is your travelling bag. As much as possible, avoid bulky luggage with wheels which weigh more than the contents. I suggest you choose a squared or rectangular shaped bag with soft but firm endpoints that may stand alone. This should be made from light but durable materials, possibly water resistant. Most people pack depending on their travelling bag, so if you choose a smaller bag for you then most likely you will pack lighter thus, travel lighter.
Consider how responsible travelling light is and others will notice the life-changing benefits of travelling lightly. Reducing our travel load will be a huge relief to our transportation systems and the earth’s resources. As travelers, we can each reduce our share and lessen the hauling of unnecessary stuff around the planet. These are some tips I use myself whenever I am travelling. It can be helpful for you, too. Meanwhile, have a wonderful time during your travels and keep learning from your latest trip. Don’t forget to include some souvenirs on your way home. Have a good trip!
