The Kosciuszko Alpine Way to Jindabyne
If your notion of an Australian Holiday in the Snowy Mountains does not include active pursuits, yet you continue to want to explore the area and experience the mountain environment, then a camper holiday could be more acceptable. The touring route will take around an entire day, depending if you make lots of stops on the way. If you start out at Thredbo and head towards Jindabyne, you'll travel across the Monaro Fields. These are local grasslands and are totally treeless. If treeless fields aren't your thing, you could go via the Kosciuszko Alpine Way to Jindabyne.
Depending on your preference, you'll arrive in Jindabyne where you could either stop, or continue on thru Jindabyne and head to the Dalgety Road. This is a sweet drive and will take you to Dalgety, which incidentally, was once thought about as the situation of Australia’s capital. There are a couple of places here where you might want to stop and one of them is Buckleys Crossing Hotel.
This is a significant hotel that has some fascinating old photos on the walls so it’s worth a look around, or even sample the beverages on offer. Alternatively, head to Iona Gardens on the banks of the Snowy Brook and experience a traditional cup of tea and/or a stroll along the brook bank. It is a beautiful area and the mountain air is bracing.
If you continue on, you may come to the town of Berridale and again, you might either stop and look around or continue on back to Thredbo by way of Jindabyne. It really is a wonderful drive and the mountain landscape is impressive. There are a couple of other routes you can take and if you pick up a map at the Visitor Information Centre in Jindabyne, you could perhaps plot your own route for some extra exploring while you travel Australia.
