[I:http://travelandleisureblog.tk/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/StanleyWorthy23.jpg]The then Decoration Day became Memorial Day was brought into being by a group of Americans of African origin who fought in the Union army and wanted to honor their dead comrades from the American Civil War. They held a service on the first of May eighteen sixty five for two fifty seven soldiers that had died and the solemn occasion was commemorated with family and friends.

This idea grabbed the imagination of fellow countrymen and within two years one-eighty-three graveyards in twenty-seven states recognized the day. It has become a national institution and a remembrance day for all soldiers who have been killed in action during wars that have followed.

Over this weekend numerous cities and towns host large parades and speeches as made by various dignitaries in honor of dead soldiers. One town in the country, Ironton, Ohio holds the distinction of hosting a parade from the third year of Decoration Day to today

With time the original concept around this day was lost and it has now become a weekend where many people are going about doing personal things such as shopping or going on holiday rather than visiting graves.

A National Memorial Concert on the west lawn of State Capitol is televised nationally and attended by thousands of people who come to listen to a program of music, song and tributes to fallen soldiers. Traditionally a Memorial Day golf tournament and the Indianapolis Five Hundred also feature at this time.

Many citizens fly flags at half-mast from sun up to sun at their homes and volunteers visit soldiers graves to drape them with flags. The day is meant to engender deep personal motivation levels to attain national unity and national goals as Memorial Day crosses borders and is inclusive of all religions and cultures.
