Christmas and New Year often overshadow the Thanksgiving Holidays. In many ways however Thanksgiving is more important than these other holidays and a time to reflect on the year past. Lets not forget Thanksgiving Dinner which is a major highlight of the holiday. It’s often the case that the host will make preparations well ahead of the actual day to ensure Thanksgiving dinner is the best it can be.
For large families, the women consider it a privilege to cook for their men as well as the rest of the relatives. There are also many recipes that are brought out JUST for this occasion.
For family members that live far away, choosing to travel for Thanksgiving or Christmas is a difficult choice. Trying to travel home from long distances away is not always possible for both Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Sometimes the only choice is to alternate between holidays each year. Traveling one year for the Thanksgiving holidays and the next year for Christmas. Although still a busy time to travel, Thanksgiving is probably easier to make bookings for. On the other hand, Christmas seems to be the “must travel” holiday and to ensure a seat, you have to book well in advance.
One big attraction for many people is the four day holiday during Thanksgiving. Some businesses will open up on the Friday but many keep the doors shut until Monday morning This make the decision to travel for the long weekend easier. The day after Thanksgiving is also know for its low prices sales and some shops offer the best deals of the year. The day after Thanksgiving will also see many folks starting to decorate their home for Christmas.
It is not necessary to choose whether the Thanksgiving holidays are your favorite or not. You can still do a lot of things to enjoy that day even if you do not have any family or friends to spend it with. If you find yourself alone for Thanksgiving, make some plans that will involve you with other people. No one has to be alone during the holidays unless they choose to be. This means Thanksgiving 2011 too. If you look around, you will find plenty of others who are on their own for the holidays. Maybe you can gather them for a nice dinner cooked by you.
